Summary: Buffy, Jack, and the Doctor accidentally land in a system where aliens fear to tread.

Inara exhaled as the shuttle docked. Mal was already halfway out the door, making sure that Wash had gotten the decoys off and set a fast tack for Haven. “That cold-hearted sonovabitch won’t think about it twice,” he shouted.

Meanwhile, Inara finally stopped shaking and spun around in the pilot’s chair. “What the hell just happened?”

Mal grinned and clapped Jack on the shoulder. “She must like you. It took me ten days to get her to swear in front of me.” With that, he exited into the ship. “Kaylee, those engines better be at one hundred percent!” Jack and Inara were left alone in the shuttle.

“So you-“ began Inara.

“I’m sorry-“ Both of them stopped, then smiled at each other.

Jack took the first turn. “So, Inara, I take it that you’re a Companion.”

“Well, yes,” she said. “Are you?”

“Yes. No. Well, I did some of the same training.” He leaned into the bulkhead. “But much, much later.”

“Later?” Inara tilted her head.

“Yeah, well,” he crossed one leg in front of the other. “I grew up in the fifty-first century. The techniques had been refined a bit by then.”

Inara nodded, choosing this moment to stand, still clutching the back of the chair with her hand. “So, you’re some kind of time-traveling mutant-”

“Mutant is such a harsh word,” interrupted Jack, raising his hand but smiling in a friendly sort of way. “I’m your standard human. I just can’t die.”

Inara took the opportunity to move closer to him, placing her hands on his chest. “Do you put it to the test often?”

“More often than I like sometimes.”

“You’re not placing Mal in any additional trouble are you?”

Jack caught the flash of protectiveness in her eyes and let out a short sigh. Here he was with a gorgeous example of the legendary Lost Age Companions and she was in love with the wrong captain. “None that he wasn’t already into himself, ma’am.”

They stayed in that position for some time. Inara broke the silence. “You’re good.”

Jack nodded. “You too. When all this is over, we’ll have to talk shop.”

Her hands fell back down to her own sides and she stepped onto Serenity. “I have a feeling we both have much to learn.”
