Summary: Buffy, Jack, and the Doctor accidentally land in a system where aliens fear to tread.

The wave closed, and Mal wiped his brow. It didn’t rain but it poured. “It’s a trap.”

Kaylee frowned. “How do you know? Could be she just missed you.”

“Did you hear us fight?” Wash and Kaylee shook their heads. “Trap.” Mal gripped the bulkhead. “So, we’ve got the Tams onboard that ship in our hold with three mighty strange folk, one of which Jayne just shot, some planet called Miranda beyond Reaver space that, along with Fruity Oaty Bars,” Mal rolled his eyes, “seems to be the source of River’s craziness, and Inara’s been tracked down by the Feds, which like as not means they’ve found the preacher too.” He massaged his temples. “Have I missed anything?”

Zoë crossed her arms. “I think that about sums it up, sir.”

Wash clapped his hands together. “Don’t forget that they know all about our little River. That girl does get around.”

Kaylee pursed her lips. “I can go back to their ship, see if they’re still willing to help us even though Jayne went and shot Jack. After all, he did get right back up.”

“I’m still not so sure of them.” Zoë looked over at Wash, who shrugged.

Mal stood. “Well, I’m not so sure as we’ve got a much of a choice in our friends. They’re pretty thin on the ground at the moment.”

“We could try Mr. Universe,” said Zoë.

Mal shook his head. “He’s hardly more trustworthy than this lot.” Zoë started. “Hey, I’m not any fonder of it than you. But they appear determined to help whether we like it or not.”

“We’re like that sometimes.” Buffy appeared at the bottom of the stairs. “If you’re willing to put your guns away for a minute or two. Can I come up?” Mal stepped back, and Buffy swung up into the cockpit. “Sorry about Jack’s theatrics in there.”

Mal ducked his head. “Yeah, well, we probably earned that.”

“You did.” Buffy picked up one of Wash’s dinosaurs. “Still, we’d rather be friends.”

“That because of what you know about River?” asked Zoë.

Buffy set the figure down. “Maybe. Mostly what I know about her is she’s a sister Slayer, and there’s not a lot that I won’t do for one of them.” Green eyes locked on Zoë’s brown ones. “From what I saw in her head, your Federal Authorities have a pretty unhealthy interest in her, probably because of the other things I saw in that head.”

Mal leaned forward. “And what was that?”

“Nothing good. But we need to go to Miranda, get our facts straight. River needs to go to Miranda, clear the nightmares out.”

Mal’s eyes darkened. “You expect us to just let you take her away in that ship of yours?”

Buffy smiled. “No. We're still in trust-building phase, so give and take is the rule of the day. The Doctor and I are going to take River out to Miranda in our TARDIS. In return, and until we return, you get Jack. Try not to shoot him again.”

“Jack?” Mal blinked. Wash and Zoë froze. Buffy was pretty sure she saw Kaylee lick her lips.

“Yeah, he’s a pretty good man in a fight. Which I sense you’ve got coming for you.” Buffy looked out at the field of stars. “Not to mention that the TARDIS is even more unreliable than usual when he’s on board. So, what do you say? Pool our resources? Save the day? Damn the man? ” She slid up against Mal, and he could smell the sweet shampoo in her hair. “Finally get that grudge match you’ve obviously been aching after for all these years?”

Mal’s throat caught. “Might be a plan.”

Buffy pushed back. “Good.” She turned to the others. “Pleasure dealing with you, I'll be in the TARDIS.” She hopped down and out of the cockpit.

Wash coughed. “Probably for the best, not bringing her to see Inara.”

Kaylee looked Mal up and down. “Yeah, you could say that twice.”

Mal finally exhaled.
