May Writing Meme: Day 2
Seeing as I'm not accomplishing much writing lately (not technically true: I'm writing lots, but the deadlines keep wooshing by without me) I may as well write about writing and count that as an accomplishment. This meme is courtesy of my beloved

Day 2: What piece of writing are you most proud of?
The Catch, which is one of my less popular works, probably for many of the same reasons that I'm most proud of it:
It's dense - I think more thought went into every word choice in it than anything else I've written before. It's tightly packed with symbolism (yes, it's 25k and it could be so much longer).
Several of the characters have more names than they'd have in a Russian novel - and every one of them has a meaning.
The setting is a completely original mythology built off a few clues from canon and a lot of pilfering from Neil Gaiman, Dante Alighieri, and 19th century occultists
It comes with a boatload of stern warnings that shouldn't be read for best effect.
It uses four different POVs, each of which has a completely different tone, none of which is in possession of all of the facts at any given time.
It has a at least three twists, each of which completely honest (every clue is there, especially if you listen to the soundtrack, sometimes they're blatant)
Most of all, it asks the reader to work almost as hard as JJ and I did in writing it (which we managed in a bare thirty days) because while the clues are all there, they're rarely if ever highlighted (except perhaps in repetition of themes).
Also, the inspirational art, not to mention the additional art, by
dollarformyname is gorgeous.
So yeah -- I don't know, maybe it's pretentious, but maybe I am too.

The Catch is my favorite one too. And not just because I was so intimately involved with it! (Though that was one of the most intense and awesome months of my entire life, and it's how I got to know you well, so I would love it even if 't was a piece of crap, which it is most decidedly not.)
