Say, hey, have you heard: blue whiskey's the rage

Mmm... okay, about a half gallon of whiskey and I don't really want to think about how many cigarettes later (there's a reason I went with Marianne Faithful for the title here), a few thoughts and anecdotes from SxSW:

1.  They lit up the Austonian (new condo tower in Austin).  It gives the skyline a Cheshire Cat-grin, which if you know anything about Austin, is profoundly fitting.

2.  Best t-shirt of the week: Steve Poltz, who performed wearing a shirt featuring a picture of Jesus.  Text underneath: "BRB"

3.  Finally saw Spoon with a decent sound guy (it was at Stubb's, so I knew I was in good hands) and they were every bit as good as I ever hoped they'd be.  Surprise of the night was Broken Bells, the new project featuring the lead singer from The Shins and Dangermouse.  Had no idea who they were going in, but they played some terrific music and put on a good show.  Definitely picking up the disc this week, now that I can get down to Waterloo again.

4.  Another thing I've been meaning to do for years: went to Antone's for a show.  Good night to do it too: I was there for Hayes Carll (wonderfully witty songwriter) but I also got to hear Jakob Dylan perform a couple of songs with The Courtyard Hounds, which is actually 2/3s of the Dixie Chicks but sounds nothing like them.  I actually liked them, and Jakob's got a much better voice than his daddy.  I also  stepped on Matthew McConnaughey's feet. He was very nice about being trod upon by a random drunken midget, and his chest is every bit as firm as it looks in the pictures.

5.  Favorite new disc/artist I picked up (so far): Ha Ha Tonka.  Caught these guys at the Bloodshot Records label party.  Excellent performers too.  It wound up being a bit of an alt-country week for me.  The guys in the band were real nice too, and I think I saw them again today picking up barbecue down in Lockhart.

6.  Best show: The Legendary Shack Shakers.  Crazy-ass live show, incredibly intense, and while they seem like chill normal guys before the act, onstage they are absolute madmen.  I'm talking serious Manson lamps here.  The studio album doesn't quite communicate how superb they are live, but is worth a pick-up as well.  If you hear about them coming to town, make a point of checking them out.

7.  Despite the fact that there were reportedly over 200 British acts here, I never heard one in more than passing.  Wacky.  Did hear a pretty good glam-rock band from Singapore, but due to aforementioned whiskey consumption, I cannot currently remember their name.

And thus spring break ends.  As for my big bang fic, Dean is safely ensconced with Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, so I think I'm only a couple thousand words from the end, which is good, because at some point this semester I should maybe write something academic.  Just for shits and giggles, y'know.
